WISH
How to use WISH in English
The word wish translates more or less as "hopefully."
Express a desire, that is, something hypothetical that is not the current reality.
We use it with the past to talk about something we want in the present, but that is not fulfilled.
Example
- I wish I spoke perfect English.
- I wish I knew what to say.
- I wish I had a million dollars and a house in Miami.
- I wish I were rich, famous and handsome.
- I wish my boss appreciated me more.
- He wishes he had a better job.
WISH with perfect past
It is also used with the perfect past, in the case of speaking of a desire for the past.
I remind you that the perfect past is formed with had + the past participle. And that is also used in the third conditional to talk about unreal situations in the past.
Here are some examples ...
- I wish I had studied medicine.
- She wishes she had not eaten that piece of cake.
